Near the end of the television series and in the OVAs, Tetsuya voices a fervent wish to enter the book world, he also eventually develops a crush on Yui.

chuei.jpg

Name: Sou Chuei
Pronunciation: Soh chew-eh
Age: I'd guess no older than 13
Hair Color: Blue (like Oniisan's)

Chuei is Tamahome's oldest little brother. While oniisan's away, Chuei is master of the household, taking care of his younger siblings and his ailing father. Chuei is the splitting image of a younger Tamahome, and in times of anguish, Miaka has been known to mistake him for Tamahome, much to Chuei's embarrassment.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv eps 25&26)
Much like the rest of his family, Chuei was killed by an enraged Suboshi, who was taking revenge on the Suzaku seishi for his brother's death. Chuei, being master of the household, bravely tried to protect his younger siblings from the cruel attack by wielding a butcher knife, but Suboshi was too strong for him. poor, poor Chuei...dead before he even had a real chance at life.

yuiren.jpg

Name: Sou Yuiren
Pronunciation: soh your-in
Age: 5
Hair Color: Brown

The youngest of Tamahome's siblings, and probably the most dear to his heart. Yurien's mother died during childbirth, therefore, it was left up to Tamahome to raise her. Yuiren is very caring and innocent...and very cute. To me, she resembles a young Miaka. Yuiren calls Miaka "oneesan" (older sister) and makes little presents for her.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv eps 25&26)
Yuiren was killed with the rest of her family by an enraged Suboshi exacting revenge for his brother's death. She never knew why she was being killed... so sad.

shunkei.jpg

Name: Sou Shunkei
Pronunciation: soh shun-kay
Age: somewhere between 7 and 8
Hair Color: Brown

To be honest, i don't know that much about Shunkei. Shunkei is one of Tamahome's younger siblings. After rewatching the television series, I've come to the conclusion that Shunkei is probably older than Yurien, but younger than Gyokulen. He also looks to be very loving to his Oniichan. I don't know, I have to admit that he's listed here for completeness sake. I'll keep my eyes open for any new info on him as well as Gyokulen.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv eps 25&26)
Needless to say, Shunkei's fate was no different from his other siblings, snuffed out at an early age by a rampaging Suboshi.

gyokulen.jpg

Name: Sou Gyokulen
Pronunciation: soh gi-yo-ku-lehn
Age: around 9 or 10
Hair Color: Black

Little Gyokulen, I imagine she fits between Chuei and Shunkei in age. Regardless, not much is known about Gyokulen (or Shunkei) as the animators seemed to latch onto Chuei and Yurien without much turning back. Again, I have to admit that Gyokulen is listed here for completeness sake, but i will try to look up some more info on her if i can.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv eps 25&26)
Like her other sibilngs, Gyokulen died during Suboshi's wrath, so young...

kotou_emp.jpg

Name: Unknown, Emperor of Kotou
Hair Color: Dark Brown

This icky guy is the Emperor of Kotou, emperor for at least the last twenty-five years, he keeps Kotou under a military rule led by his general, Nakago. Also left to Nakago is the finding and handling of the Priestess of Seiryu and her other Celestial Warriors.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv ep 52)
Okay, as we find out in the last episode, the Emperor of Kotou was single-handedly responsible for the genocidal purging of Nakago's clan, the Hin, 14 years prior. It was during this purge that a "very" young (11 years old) Nakago's seishi powers surfaced upon lashing out at the soldiers raping his mother right in front of him. The force of the blast killed not only the soldiers, but his mother as well. Nakago was then summarily detained to be shown to the Emperor personally. Realizing that Nakago was a Seiryuu Celestial Warrior, the Emperor kept Nakago within the impirial grounds and took him in as a type of "play-thing." With this type of childhood, it is easy to see where Nakago's hate of the world developed. And thusly, the pedaphilic Emperor became numero uno on Nakago's shit list once he accumulated enough power to destroy the Emperor utterly.

koji.jpg

Name: Koji
Pronunciation: koh-gee
Age: 19
Hair Color: Blue
Eye Color: Green?

Koji! Not enough can be said about Koji...he's Genrou's friend through thick and thin. Koji became leader of the Mt Reikaku bandits after Tasuki left with Miaka and company. He's also got this "great" habit of answering a door... even when he's the one doing the knocking! Koji is quite awesome and doesn't get nearly enough air time... and it's a fangirl theory out there that Koji and Tasuki's relationship extends a little further than just friendship, if you get my meaning. But anyway, it is a fangirl belief although Watase herself has denied it when asked point blank.

eiken.jpg

Name: Eiken
Pronunciation: Eye-ken
Hair Color: Grey-white

This nasty guy usurped Genrou's spot as leader of the Mt Reikaku bandits. He also helped himself to the "flame halisen," the item carried by the leader of the bandits. He also tried to have his way with Miaka when she was captured by the bandits. Eiken's not very smart, yet he still tries to rally the bandits behind his claim to the leadership position. Of course he fails when Genrou, Koji, and... Miaka! come to secure his downfall. Nothing is heard from Eiken again.

shouka.jpg

Name: Shouka
Pronunciation: Show-kah
Hair Color: Dirty Blonde

Shouka was Myojuan's girlfriend.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv eps.23)
Having fallen ill while Myojuan was away healing people in another town, Shouka died before he could return to care for her. This caused Myojuan to denounce the company of people, to give up being a doctor, and to become ultimately, a hermit. Apparently Shouka died because a demon had inhabited her body and after her death used her to create zombies of those she claimed to have cured. Myojuan, having been informed of Shouka's appearances by an ill Miaka and company, proceeded to confront Shouka and the demon within her, exorcising it and putting a finally at peace Shouka to rest.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv ep. 47+)

Near the end of the television series, Mitsukake is injured but still healing people as best he can during the Kutou attack. The very last person he heal is a baby girl aptly named Shouka. She lives and Mitsukake, having expended the last of his chi, dies.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for OVA2)

When Mitsukake's spirit is found by Nyan Nyan, he is with a toddler. A girl with blond hair, named Shouka. And, she can see him. The toddler is Shouka's reincarnation and her link to Mitsukake is still intact. At the end, when Tenkou is destroyed, the Suzaku Seven warriors are then able to be reincarnated. We see a sweet image of the little girl with a slightly younger little boy.

tama.jpg

Name: Tama
Pronunciation: Tah-ma
Hair Color: Black and White

Tama is Mitsukake's pet cat and sole companion before Miaka and the others show up. Tama is a male cat who loves to follow and play with Miaka and all of the Suzaku Seven. Tama has been known to mimic or imitate people within the show which is used for comic relief in the show. Tama cares for and worries about each Suzaku celestial warrior choosing to stay with them at the end of the show. In the OVA series, Tama appeared with a reincarnated Mitsuakake who seems to be a bit of a cry-baby...

korin.jpg

Name: Cho Korin
Pronunciation: Chou core-in
Hair Color: Purple

Korin was Nuriko's little sister.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv ep 31)
She and Nuriko were born a year apart and were so similar they could have been mistaken for twins. Korin died at age nine, having been hit by a runaway cart. Because Nuriko loved his sister so much, he was extremely heartbroken by her death. His parents told him to forget Korin, but Nuriko refused. It was at this time that he decided to live as his sister (AKA, cross-dressing) in an effort to keep her spirit close to him after her death.

kaika.jpg

Name: Kaika
Pronunciation: Kah-eye-ka
Age: 15
Height: 168cm
Blood: A

Kaika is the adopted son of a middle-aged couple living in Bakan village located in Sairou country.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv ep 37- 41?)
Kaika is Amiboshi found after having almost drowned from falling in the river after the failed Suzaku summoning ceremony. The middle aged couple took him in as their son, Kaika, who was lost years ago at a young age. Kaika has no memory of his former life, although he still harbors his regrets of being born a Seiryuu celestial warrior. Upon using his seishi powers to heal a sick Miaka, Amiboshi is awakened again, and voices a love for Miaka (as everyone does eventually it seems), and proposes marriage to her with promises of no recollection of past events or problems. Kaika/Amiboshi is noble and loyal to Miaka and turns against the Seiryuu celestial warriors in her protection. Ultimately, Amiboshi tries to persuade Suboshi into taking amnesia-causing bokyakuso broth and returning with him to the Sairou family, but Suboshi tricks him and causes only Amiboshi to forget all again... leaving him near the Sairou family's house.

***SPOILER WARNING AGAIN*** (for OVA1:1-3)
Okay, first of all, the 1st OVA was not based on the original manga and mostly confuses the storyline more than it helps it.

But, it's still fun in my opinion so i'll include Kaika's part in it here. Basically, Amiboshi had returned to his life as Kaika in Sairou with no recollections of being a Seiryuu celestial warrior ...until Yui re-entered the book world. It was then that Suboshi (who was killed in the television series) contacts Kaika by their super-cool wonder twin powers and asks Kaika to help him go protect Yui. This awakens Amiboshi's memories and he allows Suboshi to possess his body to go protect Yui. Later, a big fight breaks out between the Suzaku celestial warriors and Tenkou, and it is here that Suboshi (in Kaika/Amiboshi's body) jumps into the fray to rescue Yui, who was being used as a shield by Tenkou. It is plainly obvious that Suboshi gets injured (a hole through his chest is definately injured) and apparently dies after telling Yui that he loves her one last time (and she finally understands). I say "apparently" because reportedly, off-screen Mitsukake is able to heal Suboshi in time. This comes straight from Watase Yuu herself, so we'll believe it.

sifan.jpg

Name: Hahm Si-Fan
Pronunciation: Ha-m she-fan
Age: 15
Height: 158cm
Hair Color: Black

Si-Fan is the adopted daughter of Byakko celestial warriors Tokaki and Subaru. Apparently her real family died only a year earlier and since then she has been living with the Hahm family.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv eps 41- 42)
Si-Fan was told by her adopted father, to comfort and be friendly to (read: throw herself at) Tamahome. Basically, with Tokaki having been a Byakko celestial warrior and having watched the priestess of Byakko and fellow celestial warrior Tatara fall in love and have to separate, Tokaki was just trying to save Tamahome the pain of an impossible love. Being a good daughter, Si-Fan, of course did as he asked, and became "friendly" with Tamahome. Miaka, of course, could sense that something was going on and became very jealous. Coincidentally, Si-Fan looks remarkably like Miaka but with darker hair and good cooking. So, just when Tamahome seemed ready to permanently give up Miaka, Miaka ran headlong into danger (no, really?) causing him to chase after her and realize how much he really loves her. So Si-Fan gets the shaft.

toki.jpg

Name: Toki
Pronunciation: Toe-key
Hair Color: ? (he's bald)

Toki is the adopted grandson of Suzuno, the priestess of Byakko. As a monk, he takes care of Suzuno in her old age, never really believing her stories about a world inside a book where she was the priestess of Byakko until Keisuke and Tetsuya arrived seeking answers about the "Universe of the Four Gods". Also, later he becomes a good friend of Miaka.

houki.jpg

Name: Houki
Pronunciation: Hoo-key
Hair Color: Pale Purple

No, let's let it be a surprise.

***SPOILER WARNING*** (for tv ep 45-48)
Houki is Emperor Hotohori's wife and Empress. Hotohori married her sometime between Miaka and the others leaving for Hokkan and them returning from Sairou. Upon the end of the television episodes, she was pregnant with the next Emperor of Konan country, Boushin. When Miaka first sees Houki, she mistakes her for Nuriko and immediately hugs her. Gee, Hotohori married a Nuriko look-alike, wouldn't Nuriko be proud (or jealous).

***SPOILER WARNING AGAIN*** (for OVA 2:2)
In the 2nd OVA series, Houki is overcome with sadness over the death of Hotohori and refuses to leave her bed or care for her son. It has already been two years since Hotohori died, yet she still grieves and does not leave her room. It is only through Hotohori's undying love, when he enters Taka's body so that he can hold his son, that she leaves her mourning and re-enters the world as Empress and mother. (This episode has one of the most touching moments, when Miaka enter Houki's room, only to discover Hotohori's spirit caressing her face.
